For thousands of years, the Ken-Caryl area was home to Indigenous peoples who used its rock shelters, waterways and Hogback passageways for hunting and travel. The property later became a dairy farm and in 1914, was purchased by newspaper owner John Shaffer. Shaffer named Ken-Caryl Ranch by combining the names of his sons, Kent and Carroll.
